Brassica napus Linnaeus - known as rapeseed, rape, oilseed rape and canola in some countries is a member of the
mustard or cabbage (Brassicacea) family. It is a crop grown primarily for it's seed which yields approximately forty percent
oil in addition to a high-protein animal feed.
Growing Location
Worldwide production of Rapeseed is approximately 50 million metric tons per year. Around one third of this total is produced by EU countries and Multifry source our Rapeseed Oil exclusively within the EU.
Product Uses
Traditionally Rapeseed Oils are used for soap making, high temperature lubricating oils and plastics manufacturing. Since 1991 the EU has shifted to Rapeseed 00 production, which has a low erucic acid and glucosinolate content. It is also non GMO product making it a highly regarded edible oil. The preference of the European food industry is in favour of the Rapeseed Oil produced in Europe over other producing areas who may not operate a non-GMO policy.
In addition to it's preference as an edible oil within the food industry Rapeseed Oil is now widely used as the base oil for production of biodiesel. It is currently estimated that in excess of four million metric tons of Rapeseed Oil goes into biodiesel annually.
